Born on August 14, 1943, in Dover, New Jersey, John Costanza has built one of the more quietly remarkable careers in American comics, accumulating credits across more than four thousand issues spanning six decades of work for both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. He entered the industry in 1966 and proved himself equally capable as an artist, letterer, inker, colorist, and occasional writer.

Costanza is perhaps best recognized for his lettering work, including his contributions during Alan Moore's celebrated run on *Swamp Thing* — a period widely regarded as a high point in sophisticated comics storytelling. His steady hand appeared regularly across DC's most prominent titles, among them *Superman*, *Detective Comics*, *Batman*, and *Wonder Woman*, making him a consistent presence behind some of the publisher's flagship characters.

Beyond the superhero genre, a substantial portion of his artistic output gravitated toward anthropomorphic animal comics and children-oriented material, a sensibility that also informed his work on *Simpsons Comics*. This range — from the dense atmospheric pages of Moore's horror-inflected *Swamp Thing* to lighter, all-ages fare — speaks to a professional adaptability that kept Costanza relevant across vastly different editorial climates. His career stands as a testament to the indispensable craftspeople whose names appear in fine print but whose contributions shape the reading experience as surely as any writer or penciler.
