Steve Englehart had taken over the Beast solo feature from Gerry Conway with issue #12, and by #13 he was already pursuing a longer-game plan for Patsy Walker: as a self-described fan who had collected her old romance comics, Englehart recalled being struck by her cameo in Fantastic Four Annual #3 and wanting to bring her in 'as a real character, with things to do.' The issue was penciled by Tom Sutton — Englehart's collaborator across this run — with inks by Frank Giacoia, a cover by John Romita Sr., and Stan Lee credited as editor; it went on sale April 18, 1972, carrying a July 1972 cover date.
