The Defenders #29
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThe Defenders #29 is the concluding chapter of writer Steve Gerber's landmark four-issue Defenders–Guardians of the Galaxy crossover (spanning Defenders #26–29), which was instrumental in reviving the original 31st-century Guardians team and planting them firmly in Bronze Age Marvel continuity. The issue marks the first appearance of Aleta Ogord, the Arcturan warrior whose shared existence with Stakar Ogord as the composite being Starhawk introduced one of Marvel's most unusual explorations of dual identity and shared consciousness to that point in the medium. It also delivers the narrative moment in which Starhawk formally joins the Guardians of the Galaxy, cementing the classic lineup that would later carry over into the characters' own feature in Marvel Presents and influence both the 1990s Guardians ongoing and the MCU's portrayal of the team. Gerber's willingness to embed social commentary — touching on the Badoon's sexually segregated society — within a mainstream superhero adventure made the arc a quietly daring artifact of its era.

The issue was written by Steve Gerber, who had taken over The Defenders with issue #20 (February 1975) and made the revitalization of forgotten Marvel properties a hallmark of his run. Gerber had already reintroduced the Guardians in Marvel Two-In-One #4–5 and Giant-Size Defenders #5 before extending their story across Defenders #26–29; his affinity for the team led directly to their receiving their own ongoing feature in Marvel Presents #3. The creative team on #29 — Sal Buscema on pencil layouts, Vince Colletta on inks and finishes, John Costanza on letters, and Glynis Oliver on colors — was the regular Defenders unit of the period, with the cover attributed to penciler Ron Wilson and inker Frank Giacoia. Len Wein served as editor on the title during this arc.
