History

The issue was edited by Julius Schwartz, who had been systematically steering Batman away from the campy residue of the 1966 television series by assembling a new creative roster that included writer Frank Robbins and inker Dick Giordano alongside rising star Neal Adams. Adams had been occupied through late 1969 with his final issues of the X-Men at Marvel and was wrapping up his Brave and the Bold run at DC, making his schedule available for the Batman title proper just as this issue went to press. The 'Silent Night' back-up was written by Mike Friedrich — one of the first Silver Age fans to break into professional comics — whose peaceful sensibility gave Adams room to demonstrate his mastery of silent, sequential storytelling; DC, apparently not yet grasping what it had, didn't even mention Adams's interior story on the cover he himself drew.
