About this Issue

Avengers #154 marks the debut of Tyrak the Treacherous, a superhumanly powerful Atlantean soldier created by Gerry Conway and George Pérez who proved durable enough to recur in Avengers stories for years afterward. The issue also kicks off a tightly woven four-part Bronze Age crossover that threads through both this title and Super-Villain Team-Up, an early example of Marvel using inter-title storytelling to tie its undersea mythology—Attuma, Namor, and Hydrobase—directly into Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Conway's script delivers a genuine cliffhanger in which Tyrak single-handedly defeats the full active Avengers roster, a narrative beat that gave Pérez room to showcase the sprawling, kinetic ensemble choreography that would define his career. The story also captures the newly reconstituted mid-1970s Avengers lineup—Beast, Iron Man, Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Wasp, Yellowjacket, and Wonder Man—at an early point in that team's cohesion.

History

The issue was written and edited by Gerry Conway, who had taken over The Avengers as part of a turbulent editorial transition at Marvel in 1976—a changeover that had roiled the book through its 150th-issue anniversary. Conway scripted the story in the 'Marvel style,' supplying plot beats and action description while George Pérez—who also received a plot credit—directed the visual storytelling and paced the large cast across multiple locations simultaneously. The cover was laid out and inked by Al Milgrom over Jack Kirby pencils, a credit Milgrom confirmed on record in 2006. Editor-in-Chief at the time was Archie Goodwin, and the book shipped with a September 1976 on-sale date under a December 1976 cover date.

  • First appearance of Tyrak the Treacherous (also known as Tyrak the Terrible), an Atlantean super-soldier in service to Attuma, created by Gerry Conway and George Pérez.
  • Titled 'When Strikes Attuma?'; script by Gerry Conway, pencils by George Pérez (with plot credit), inks by Pablo Marcos, colors by Don Warfield, letters by Gaspar Saladino (page 1) and John Costanza.
  • Cover penciled by Jack Kirby and inked/laid out by Al Milgrom; Milgrom confirmed the cover layout credit on record in 2006.
  • Part 1 of a 4-part story; the narrative continues directly in Super-Villain Team-Up #9 before returning to Avengers #155 and #156—an inter-title crossover structure that also involves Namor and Doctor Doom.
  • Tyrak infiltrates Avengers Mansion disguised as the Inhuman Triton; the Scarlet Witch exposes the impostor with a hex bolt, after which Tyrak defeats nearly the entire active Avengers lineup—only the Beast escapes.
  • The Whizzer (Robert Frank) makes a cameo appearance, delivered to a hospital following injuries sustained in Avengers Annual #6, which directly precedes this issue in continuity.
  • Attuma's prior Marvel Universe appearances were in Super-Villain Team-Up #3; this issue expands his role by establishing his scheme to pit the Avengers against Namor as a proxy weapon.
  • Reprinted in Avengers Epic Collection Vol. 9: The Final Threat (2013), Super-Villains Unite: The Complete Super-Villain Team-Up (2015), and Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers Vol. 16 (2016); a Mark Jeweler insert variant and a UK edition (10p cover price) also exist.
