Dracula Lives launched on October 26, 1974 — the same week as Marvel UK's Planet of the Apes weekly — making the two titles the fourth and fifth entries in the nascent Marvel UK weekly publishing line, which had previously concentrated on reprinting superhero material from Mighty World of Marvel and Spider-Man Comics Weekly. The issue's lead feature reprinted the first thirteen pages of Tomb of Dracula #1 (April 1972), a story plotted by Roy Thomas, scripted by Gerry Conway, drawn by Gene Colan, and edited by Stan Lee, which had originally revived Dracula for the Marvel Universe in the wake of the Comics Code Authority's 1971 relaxation of restrictions on horror characters. The backup slot reprinted the debut Werewolf by Night story from Marvel Spotlight #2 (February 1972), created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog from a plot by Roy and Jean Thomas, again a direct product of that same Code liberalization. Marvel UK's editorial choice to lead with horror rather than costumed heroes represented a deliberate pivot, positioning Dracula Lives as something distinct from its sibling titles from the very first issue.
