“The Nightmare!”

Joe Kubert's cover for this 1972 DC issue says it all — Tarzan, knife raised, squares off simultaneously against a monstrous fanged bird of prey and a sinister green serpentine figure adorned with an elaborate headdress, the whole scene crackling with desperate, airborne tension. The story title "The Nightmare!" fits perfectly, as both creatures press in from opposite sides, leaving the Lord of the Jungle precious little room to maneuver on a bare branch. Kubert's bold linework and Tatjana Wood's vivid coloring make this an irresistibly striking entry in DC's early-'70s adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' enduring creation.
