“Death Is the Black Racer!”

Jack Kirby's imagination is on full display in this 1971 entry in his ambitious New Gods saga — the cover shows a red-armored Orion streaking through a nighttime cityscape on his Astro-Harness, while below, a mysterious figure watches from a green car as the ominous tagline asks, "Is he after Orion… or you?" The inset portrait of the Black Racer and the bold warning "Run! Run! Death Is the Black Racer!" make it clear that something formidable is bearing down on New Genesis's fiercest warrior. Inked by Vince Colletta, the cover captures the cosmic-meets-urban energy that made Kirby's Fourth World books such a striking departure for DC in the early '70s.
