In "Chapter 1 The Lawgiver," peace in a shared human-ape village shatters when the Lawgiver ventures into the forbidden zone, triggering a violent rampage by gorillas that leaves Alexander’s father and Jason’s parents dead. As Jason takes up the pursuit on foot, he’s outpaced by the killers riding horseback, setting a tense and desperate tone for the story. Written by Doug Moench and Gerry Conway, with striking art by Mike Ploog and lettering by John Costanza, the issue’s cover by Ron Wilson and Mike Esposito captures the growing dread.
