“The Executioner”

Joe Kubert's cover for this November 1968 issue delivers an unsettling image: a towering Nazi officer — sword at his side, swastika armband prominent against a red-and-black flag — looms over a bizarre scene below, where the Haunted Tank is surrounded not by soldiers alone, but by a crowd of clowns, performers, and armed figures in what appears to be a surreal circus-meets-warzone confrontation. The bold headline "Beware the Executioner!" makes clear that this green-uniformed villain is the threat at the center of the story. Robert Kanigher's WWII anthology remains one of DC's most compelling war titles, and this striking issue, featuring the beloved Haunted Tank, is a fine example of why.
