Trivia · 8 facts
- Cover date: September 1969; store date approximately July 31, 1969 — placing it at the tail end of the Silver Age.
- Cover artist: Neal Adams — one of a consecutive run of Adams horror covers on the title during 1969, executed in ink over graphite on Bristol board (original art dimensions: approximately 10" × 15").
- Editor: Murray Boltinoff, who oversaw the entire first phase of The Unexpected (issues #105–188).
- Interior credits: scripts by George Kashdan and Dave Wood; pencils by Ed Robbins and Art Saaf; inks by Vince Colletta and Art Saaf; lettering by Gaspar Saladino.
- Two stories: the lead Johnny Peril tale 'My Self — My Enemy!' (in which a moonstone-powered clay golem drains the occult detective's life force) and 'The Well of Second Chances,' which serves as the debut showcase for the Mad Mod Witch as a framing host character.
- Johnny Peril — a Golden Age occult detective created by Howard Purcell, first appearing in Comic Cavalcade #19 (1946) — was revived for The Unexpected beginning with issue #106 (1968); #114 continues that Silver Age revival.
- The series The Unexpected ran 118 issues (#105–#222, February/March 1968 – May 1982), directly continuing the numbering of Tales of the Unexpected.
- The entire issue was reprinted in DC Finest: Horror: The Devil's Doorway (2025), a curated collection spanning The Unexpected #113–117 alongside House of Secrets #81–85, House of Mystery #180–185, The Phantom Stranger #5, and The Witching Hour #3–7.
