Joe Kubert's cover for this second DC issue says it all — Korak, knife in hand, hurls himself onto an enormous crocodile whose jaws are already closing around a terrified blonde woman in the churning water below. It's a visceral, kinetic scene that captures Edgar Rice Burroughs' jungle hero at his most ferociously protective, and Kubert renders every scale and splash with real dramatic weight. With Len Wein writing and Frank Thorne on interior art, this August 1972 issue makes a strong case that DC's stewardship of the Burroughs legacy was off to a confident start.
