“Operation: Death Trap”

Joe Kubert's cover for G.I. Combat #133 frames a tense wartime moment through a dramatically shadowed archway, where enemy soldiers bearing swastika insignia loom on either side while an injured man lies sprawled in the foreground. Beyond them, framed in a shaft of harsh light, crewmen atop the Haunted Tank call out to Lt. Stuart — "There is our brother… he is safe!!" — as the tank rolls across open desert terrain. It's a striking composition that perfectly captures the high-stakes rescue energy promised by "Operation: Death Trap," one of DC's most dependable WWII anthology titles of 1968.
