Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Jason (human) and Alexander (chimpanzee), the original protagonist duo created for Marvel's 'Terror on the Planet of the Apes' serial.
  • First issue of the first ongoing comic book series based on the Planet of the Apes franchise, published under Marvel's Curtis Magazines imprint with a cover date of August 1974 and an on-sale date of June 25, 1974.
  • Contains two comics features: Part 1 of the original serial 'Terror on the Planet of the Apes' (script by Doug Moench from an idea by Gerry Conway; art by Mike Ploog) and Part 1 of a serialized adaptation of the 1968 film (script by Moench; pencils by George Tuska; inks by Mike Esposito).
  • Cover painting by Bob Larkin, who went on to produce numerous covers across the magazine's run.
  • Includes a print interview with Rod Serling — co-screenwriter of the original 1968 film and creator of The Twilight Zone — one of the standout journalistic 'gets' of the issue.
  • Also features a text piece by Marvel editor-in-chief Roy Thomas and a feature article titled 'How to Make a Man-Ape,' reflecting the magazine's hybrid comics-and-journalism format.
  • The 'Terror on the Planet of the Apes' story from this issue was reprinted internationally in Dutch (Apenplaneet #1, 1975), Norwegian (Apeplaneten #1, 1975), German (Planet der Affen #1, 1975), French (Planète des Singes #1, 1977), the Marvel UK weekly (issue #12, January 1975), and later collected by Boom! Studios in its Planet of the Apes: Archive #1 (2017).
  • The film-adaptation segment from this issue was also reprinted in color in Adventures on the Planet of the Apes #1 (Marvel, 1975), which colorized and reformatted the Curtis magazine's movie adaptations for a standard newsstand comic audience.
