Stan Sakai

Born on May 25, 1953, in Japan, Stan Masahiko Sakai immigrated to the United States and built one of the most distinctive and enduring careers in American independent comics. He is best known as the creator of *Usagi Yojimbo*, a long-running series following a ronin rabbit navigating a feudal Japan populated by anthropomorphic animals — a concept that has sustained his creative output across hundreds of issues spanning more than four decades.

Sakai's entry into the industry came through his work as a letterer, most notably on Sergio Aragonés's *Groo the Wanderer*, a collaboration that proved formative and lasting. His relationship with Aragonés extended to *The Mighty Magnor* as well, demonstrating a productive creative partnership rooted in mutual respect and shared sensibility. His catalog of nearly 690 credited issues reflects a remarkable range of roles — writer, artist, inker, colorist, and letterer — making him one of the more genuinely self-sufficient storytellers in the medium.

Beyond the main *Usagi Yojimbo* series, Sakai explored the property through offshoots including *Space Usagi* and *Usagi Yojimbo: The Hidden*, deepening the world he first introduced in 1982.
