Although Taro appears to have been killed over gambling debts, Usagi realizes all of the evidence came from Muro's testimony and confronts him. Muro blinds Usagi with poison but even blinded Usagi is able to slay him. Kitsune and Kiyoko are permitted to leave the city, but Kiyoko steals Inspector Ishida's jitte before they go.
