Groo: Gods Against Groo #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeGroo's enormous, bug-eyed face dominates the foreground of this cover, sword in hand, while an impossibly crowded pantheon of deities — ranging from multi-armed goddesses and bearded sky-gods to fantastical creatures of every mythological stripe — looms behind him in the clouds, all apparently united in their exasperation with comics' most catastrophically unlucky wanderer. Sergio Aragonés draws every figure with his trademark dense, expressive line work, packing the image with the kind of visual comedy that rewards a long second look. This first issue of a four-part miniseries promises the full creative team of Aragonés, Mark Evanier, Carrie Strachan, and Stan Sakai firing on all cylinders.

Groo takes his unlikely place among the pantheon of gods because people began worshipping his Earthbound self and, the more they believe in him, the mightier a god he becomes. His typically unbridled behavior appalls the traditional gods, who combine their individual armies against Groo setting up a fray of (literally) mythic proportions. Meanwhile, The Sage worms his way into the Queen of Iberza's confidence, becoming a trusted advisor, and The Minstrel is hauled-off to prison for the unthinkable crime of singing songs about Groo.
