Usagi Yojimbo #29
In "Stan Talks to Usagi," Usagi Yojimbo teams up with his friend Ishida to escort the captured Haya, whose brother Kaba remains at large, as they seek shelter from the storm at an inn. Among the uneasy guests—poet Saburo, bodyguard Benki, merchant Kami and his daughter Ayano, assistant Hoku, and the enigmatic stranger Hasegawa—tensions rise when Kami refuses to sell a priceless poem by the legendary Haseo. Late that night, Ayano’s terrified scream shatters the silence, revealing Kami’s body—strangled and surrounded by burned paper. Written and illustrated by Stan Sakai, this issue blends quiet dread with the familiar warmth of Usagi’s world, its cover by Stan Sakai capturing the storm-lit tension of the moment.

Usagi again meets his friend Ishida and helps him escort his bound prisoner Haya, whose brother Kaba is still at large. To escape the rain, they spend the night at an inn; the other guests include amateur poet Saburo and his bodyguard Benki; paper merchant Kami, his daughter Ayano and assistant Hoku; and Hasegawa, a stranger. Kami reveals he's carrying a poem written by the great poet Haseo, but refuses to sell it when Saburo demands it. Late in the night, Ayano awakens Usagi and Ishida with her screams; her father has been strangled to death and burned paper lies next to his corpse.
