About this Collection

This volume collects the nineteenth story arc of Stan Sakai's long-running samurai epic, focusing on the complex relationship between Usagi and his son, Jotaro, as they navigate their shared warrior heritage. The title also explores themes of legacy and mentorship through interactions with Usagi's sensei, Katsuichi, and his ally Tomoe Ame, weaving together action and family drama in feudal Japan.

In "Fathers and Sons Part One," Stan Sakai delivers a poignant chapter in the Usagi Yojimbo saga, exploring the formative clash between pride and principle through young Katsuichi’s quiet defiance. With art, inks, and letters all by Sakai, the issue unfolds with the weight of tradition and the quiet cost of honor, set against the backdrop of a rival sword school’s headmaster’s daughter. The cover, also by Sakai, captures the tension of a moment that will shape Katsuichi’s path.

"Bells" recounts a formative event in young Katsuichi's life when he was in love with the headmaster’s daughter of a rival sword school. Katsuichi's pursuit of the girl doesn’t sit well with Ikyu, the proud senior instructor who intends to marry her. With his public image threatened and his intent with the girl contested, Ikyu challenges Katsuichi to a duel, only to have Katsuichi say no. Facing public disgrace and shouldering his new reputation as a coward, Katsuichi eventually earns the title of "The Master."
