Usagi meets Ichiro, who is carrying his aged mother on his back to see his father. Usagi defends the pair from bandits and accompanies them on their trip, even bearing Ichiro's mother on his back as they climb Mount Hurai. With Ichiro unable to complete the climb, Usagi carries the mother alone and discovers her husband is dead and she has chosen to die so that her family will have enough food during the current famine. Unable to dissaude her, Usagi leaves the woman atop Mount Hurai.
