Jei judges Yukichi to be innocent and lets him live. Usagi fights off the criminals in the woods, who prove to be professional escorts who have turned to crime because the shogun's peace has harmed their livelihood. The last of the escorts is slain by Jei. When Yukichi describes Jei to Usagi, Usagi instantly recognizes who his cousin encountered.
