"Bells" recounts a formative event in young Katsuichi's life when he was in love with the headmaster’s daughter of a rival sword school. Katsuichi's pursuit of the girl doesn’t sit well with Ikyu, the proud senior instructor who intends to marry her. With his public image threatened and his intent with the girl contested, Ikyu challenges Katsuichi to a duel, only to have Katsuichi say no. Facing public disgrace and shouldering his new reputation as a coward, Katsuichi eventually earns the title of "The Master."
