The Minstrel character debuted alongside series villain Taranto in the very first issue of the Epic/Marvel run of Groo the Wanderer (1983), where he was created as a narrative device to frame Groo's tales in song — with Evanier writing the verse while Aragonés handled art. Minstrel Melodies grew out of that decades-old conceit, with Dark Horse announcing the four-issue miniseries in May 2024; the creative team of Aragonés (writer/artist), Evanier (writer/editor), colorist Carrie Strachan, and Eisner Award-winning letterer Stan Sakai — a lineup consistent with the modern Dark Horse era of the title — carried the book from its September 2024 launch through issue #3's November 13, 2024 on-sale date.
