“The Inn on Moon Shadow Hill”
About this Collection

This fourteenth volume of the Usagi Yojimbo series collects stories featuring the ronin Miyamoto Usagi, alongside allies like the bounty hunter Gen and the ninja Sasuké. The collection includes the title story 'Demon Mask,' where Usagi confronts a supernatural threat, as well as tales involving the Neko Ninja clan led by Chizu, and appearances by Usagi's son Jotaro and his mentor Katsuichi.

In "The Inn on Moon Shadow Hill," Samo the thief makes a desperate move, hiding a precious jewel inside an unfired bowl before fleeing—only to leave behind a subtle mark that will unexpectedly spark a creative revolution. Written and drawn by Stan Sakai, this 2001 issue from Dark Horse captures quiet moments of consequence, where a single, accidental deformation sets a potter on a new artistic path. The story’s delicate balance of theft, artistry, and unintended legacy unfolds in a world where small choices ripple far beyond their moment.

Samo the thief burglarizes a local merchant, then hides in the pottery shop, pushing a precious jewel into an unfired bowl, then pulling one side down to mark it. The next day the potter finds the deformed bowl, realizes the deformity forms the innovation he was looking for and deforms all of his bowls the same way.
