The men pursuing the Bible turn out to be Shogunate officials and they attack Ishida and Usagi. During the fight, Kin's shop is lit on fire by a fallen candle. Hama seemingly enters the flames with the Bible, dying to protect the Bible from the state. Satisfied by the Bible's destruction, the Shogunate officials depart. Ishida turns out to be one of the secret Christians and Hama actually slipped him the Bible so he could share it with other believers.
