James Tynion IV was born on December 14, 1987, and has established himself as one of the more versatile voices in contemporary American comics, equally at home with DC's flagship characters and his own creator-owned projects. He broke into the industry through work at DC Comics, where he went on to write Batman, Batman Eternal, and Detective Comics, as well as the crossover Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy and a second volume of Justice League Dark. His tenure on Batman also produced The Nice House on the Lake, a DC Black Label series that showcased his appetite for unsettling, character-driven storytelling.

Outside the DC umbrella, Tynion has built a substantial body of independent work. Something Is Killing the Children and The Department of Truth both drew significant attention, and earlier projects like The Woods and Memetic demonstrated a consistent interest in horror and speculative fiction. His catalog spans nearly 800 credited issues between 2012 and 2026.

Awards have followed in kind: Tynion has earned five Eisner Awards overall, three of them in 2022 alone. He is also the most-nominated writer in the history of the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book, with ten nominations and one win, in 2016 — a distinction that reflects both his prolific output and the range of perspectives his work brings to the medium.
