About this Issue

Wynd: The Power of the Blood #2 is a significant chapter in one of the most celebrated queer-centered fantasy sagas in modern American comics — a multi-arc series that earned both Eisner and GLAAD Award nominations for its unflinching portrayal of a boy whose magical heritage functions as a layered metaphor for identity, otherness, and belonging. Arriving in January 2025, the issue continues the bi-monthly finale arc that brings the entire Wynd saga — spanning back to the original 2020 run — toward its conclusion, deepening the three-way conflict between humans, Faeriekind, and Vampyres while moving the full ensemble cast through its most consequential plot machinery yet. The issue's dual narrative thrust — a jailbreak led by Prince Yorik and Oakley and Thorn's arrival at the Academy — advances the series' consistent argument that young people navigating hostile systems can reshape the world around them, a thematic throughline Tynion IV has publicly tied to his own experience as an openly queer creator.

History

The Wynd saga has an unusually long gestational history: writer James Tynion IV has stated he first conceived the world and its title character when he was sixteen years old, carrying the ideas through high school before eventually finding a creative partner in Greek artist Michael Dialynas, with whom he had already won a GLAAD Media Award on The Woods. The series was originally announced as a graphic novel trilogy under BOOM!'s BOOM! Box imprint for a November 2020 release, but the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the publisher to pivot to an oversized single-issue format as a way to provide more product to struggling retailers — each early issue ran more than forty pages. By the time The Power of the Blood launched in November 2024 as the concluding chapter, letterer AndWorld Design had taken over from original letterer Aditya Bidikar, and the project was being produced in collaboration with Tynion IV's own multimedia production house, Tiny Onion.
