About this Collection

This collection kicks off the whimsical series by James Tynion IV and Rian Sygh, following a group of stage crew kids at an all-boys school who discover that the backstage area of their theater is a magical, sprawling world filled with strange creatures and hidden passages. Volume 1 gathers the first four issues of the original 2018 run from Boom! Studios, blending heartfelt friendship dynamics with supernatural adventure behind the curtain.

"Act One" introduces Jory, a new student eager to find his place, as he stumbles into the hidden world of the Backstagers—those who keep the theater running behind the scenes. Written by James Tynion IV and brought to life with vivid art by Rian Sygh and bold colors by Walter Baiamonte, this first issue reveals a backstage realm of shifting tunnels and strange wonders, where the real magic of performance lives. The striking cover by Veronica Fish captures the mystery and allure of this hidden world.

New at his school, Jory seeks to join the drama club, but the McQueens (twins, stars, and co-presidents), disdain not only Jory but also everyone else, other than themselves, connected with the theater. Jory meets the Backstagers, who explain that they make the performances possible. They also explain that the source of theatrical magic lies deep backstage, in ever-shifting tunnels with weird life and contents.
