About this Issue

Batman and Robin Eternal #1 is the opening chapter of DC's second weekly 'Eternal' event series and serves as the New 52/DC You-era reintroduction of Cassandra Cain into mainstream DC continuity — her first appearance in the post-Flashpoint universe after being largely absent since the 2011 reboot. The series was explicitly conceived to celebrate Robin's 75th anniversary, mirroring how the preceding Batman Eternal had honored Batman's 75th, giving every major Robin a co-starring role in a single interconnected weekly narrative. The debut issue also introduces the villain Mother — a human trafficker who weaponizes children — as the overarching antagonist, and plants a flashback mystery around Batman's early career that would drive the entire 26-issue run. As the first weekly Bat-family series to center all the Robins simultaneously rather than Batman himself, it marked a notable creative shift in how DC structured ensemble Bat-titles.

History

The series was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2015 by lead writer James Tynion IV, who had emerged as DC's primary Batman-universe architect through his close mentorship under Scott Snyder at Sarah Lawrence College and their shared work on Batman Eternal. Snyder served as 'showrunner' — plotting the overall story alongside Tynion — while a rotating room of writers including Tim Seeley, Steve Orlando, Genevieve Valentine, Ed Brisson, and Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly handled individual issues. An 8-page preview of the series was bundled inside Batman: Endgame Special Edition #1 in September 2015 — a free Batman Day giveaway — giving readers a first look at the story and Tony S. Daniel's art before the issue hit stands on October 7, 2015.

An 8-page story preview of the series appeared in Batman: Endgame Special Edition #1 (September 2015), distributed free on Batman Day, written by Tynion and drawn by Daniel.
