Batman #106
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeBatman #106 marks a structural turning point for DC's flagship Batman title: it was the first issue published under the Infinite Frontier initiative, shifting the series from a twice-monthly schedule back to monthly while inaugurating a new era for James Tynion IV's run. The issue contains the cameo first appearance of Miracle Molly — the transhumanist tech-genius at the heart of the Unsanity Collective — whose ideological clash with both Batman and Scarecrow over the nature of fear would become the thematic spine of the line-wide Fear State crossover event later that year. As the opening chapter of 'The Cowardly Lot,' it also planted the seeds for the Magistrate program, a surveillance-state concept directly connected to the then-recent Future State timeline, giving Tynion's Gotham an unusually coherent through-line between possible future and lived present.
In "The Cowardly Lot Part One," Batman faces the unsettling rise of the Unsanity Collective, aided by Oracle and the enigmatic Ghost-Maker, as paranoia spreads through Gotham. While Simon Saint pushes his Magistrate program to Mayor Nakano, the shadow of the Scarecrow lingers, unseen but deeply felt.

Writer James Tynion IV and artist Jorge Jiménez — the team that had just completed 'The Joker War' — returned to Batman after a two-month pause during the Future State publishing event, making #106 their official re-launch issue inside the Infinite Frontier umbrella. Tynion had been developing Miracle Molly and the Unsanity Collective concept in his newsletter for months ahead of publication, deliberately concealing her full design until Batman #108, and Batman group editor Ben Abernathy collaborated closely with Tynion to use the new backup-feature structure as a tool to unify the entire Bat-line. The backup story — 'Demon or Detective, Part One,' written by Joshua Williamson with art by Gleb Melnikov — was included at Tynion's request as a bridge into Williamson's forthcoming Robin solo series, reflecting a deliberate editorial strategy of making Batman #106 a hub from which multiple satellite titles would branch.

- Opening chapter of 'The Cowardly Lot' arc — the first story arc of DC's Infinite Frontier publishing initiative — and the issue that re-established a monthly release cadence for Batman (vol. 3) after the series had run twice-monthly during the Rebirth era.
- Main story written by James Tynion IV, with interior art and covers by Jorge Jiménez and colors by Tomeu Morey; backup 'Demon or Detective, Part One' written by Joshua Williamson with art by Gleb Melnikov.
- Backup story 'Demon or Detective' follows Damian Wayne traveling to Markovia to confront Talia al Ghul and reclaim his position as heir to the Demon Throne; the story concludes in Detective Comics #1034 and leads into Williamson's Robin ongoing series.
- Introduces Simon Saint and his pitch of the Magistrate/Peacekeeper program to Mayor Christopher Nakano — the proto-authoritarian law-enforcement concept previously seen in the future-set DC Future State books, now shown being born in the present-day timeline.
- The issue was published on March 2, 2021, with a cover date of May 2021; a second printing was issued in June 2021, and the backup 'Demon or Detective, Part One' was later reprinted in Batman vs. Robin: Road to War.
- Three cover editions exist: a main Jorge Jiménez cover, a Jiménez wraparound variant, and a 1:25 retailer-incentive card-stock variant by Riccardo Federici.
- The Unsanity Collective scenes in this issue directly set up the Fear State crossover event (August–December 2021), in which Miracle Molly, Ghost-Maker, and Scarecrow all played central roles across Batman and multiple tie-in titles.
