About this Issue

Wynd: The Power of the Blood #5 opens the concluding chapter of James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas's years-long fantasy epic — the point at which the entire Wynd saga pivots toward its final resolution after four preceding story arcs. The series has stood out across its run as one of the most prominent queer-led YA fantasy titles in contemporary comics, using a world of magic, vampyres, and faeriekind to explore themes of prejudice and the pain of hiding who you are. The Power of the Blood arc, encompassing this issue, earned a nomination for Outstanding Comic Book at the 37th Annual GLAAD Media Awards — continuing a recognition streak that has seen Tynion become the most-nominated writer in that award's history. For readers and historians of LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream comics, the arc capping with this issue represents the culmination of one of the medium's most sustained queer coming-of-age narratives of the 2020s.

History

Tynion has described Wynd as the story closest to his own experience, one he first sketched out as a teenager and refined over years before finally bringing it to comics. The series launched in June 2020 as a deliberate surprise — the first BOOM! Studios title announced and released outside the publisher's traditional three-month advance solicitation cycle — reuniting Tynion and Dialynas after three prior years collaborating on The Woods. The Power of the Blood mini-series, of which issue #5 is a part, was structured as a bi-monthly five-issue run beginning November 2024, with the same creative team of Tynion, Dialynas (handling art, color, and lettering), and AndWorld Design (additional lettering) that carried the book from its origin, and longtime series editor Eric Harburn shepherding it to its conclusion.
