About this Issue

Wynd: The Power of the Blood #8 is the concluding chapter of the entire Wynd saga, a queer-led young-adult fantasy series that earned multiple Eisner Award and GLAAD Media Award nominations over the course of its run. The issue closes out a continuous story arc that writer James Tynion IV had been developing since adolescence, making its publication the fulfillment of a years-long creative vision. As the final issue of a four-volume fantasy epic centered on a queer protagonist navigating a world where magical heritage is persecuted — an allegory widely read as reflecting real-world experiences of marginalization — it represents a meaningful capstone for LGBTQ+ representation in all-ages genre comics. The Power of the Blood arc as a whole received a nomination for the 37th Annual GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book, underscoring the series' continued cultural resonance right through its conclusion.

History

The Wynd concept originated with James Tynion IV in high school, where he described carrying a binder of ideas to class and developing what he called 'the ur-story that every story I've told since comes from.' The series was originally announced in January 2020 as a trilogy of original graphic novels under BOOM! Studios' all-ages BOOM! Box imprint, but was pivoted into an oversized serialized format — each issue running over 40 pages, more than twice the standard comic — in a surprise launch in June 2020, the first BOOM! Studios title ever solicited outside the traditional three-month advance solicitation cycle. Tynion IV reunited with artist Michael Dialynas, with whom he had previously collaborated for three years on the GLAAD Award-winning series The Woods; the final arc, The Power of the Blood, launched in November 2024 and was produced in collaboration with Tynion IV's own multimedia production house, Tiny Onion. Letterer AndWorld Design handled the lettering duties throughout the final chapter.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by James Tynion IV with art by Michael Dialynas; published by BOOM! Studios on April 15, 2026.
  • This is the final issue (#8 of 8) of Wynd: The Power of the Blood, the concluding chapter of the four-volume Wynd saga that began in June 2020.
  • The issue resolves the climactic 'last stand of Pipetown,' in which Wynd and his found family face the Vampyre forces of the villain Zedra, whose army has weaponized Wynd's magical blood to regrow their wings.
  • The overall Wynd series is one of the most-nominated titles in GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book history, with the Power of the Blood arc itself receiving a nomination at the 37th Annual GLAAD Media Awards (2026).
  • The series received a 2022 Eisner Award nomination for Best Publication for Teens (Age 13-17); Tynion IV himself won Eisner Awards for Best Writer in 2021 and 2022, with Wynd among the credited works.
  • Tynion IV first conceived the Wynd concept as a teenager in high school — describing it publicly as his 'dream project' — making the saga one of the longest-gestating creator-owned narratives to reach completion in modern BOOM! Studios history.
  • Dialynas, who is based in Athens, Greece, serves as co-creator and sole illustrator across the entire saga; his work on The Woods (2014–2017) with Tynion was the prior GLAAD Award-winning collaboration that preceded Wynd.
  • The issue shipped with five cover variants: a main cover and virgin incentive by Dialynas, variant and incentive covers by Pablo Tunica, and an incentive by Jon Lankry.
