About this Issue

Batman (Vol. 3) #100 serves as the grand finale of the 'Joker War' storyline — a sprawling arc in which the Joker seized control of Bruce Wayne's entire fortune and arsenal — and uses the milestone centennial issue to simultaneously close one chapter and open several new ones. It marks the first appearance of Ghost-Maker (Minhkhoa Khan), a lethal rival who trained alongside Bruce Wayne and represents one of the most fully conceptualized new additions to the Batman mythos in years. The issue also restores Barbara Gordon to the Oracle role in-continuity, a development fans had wanted since the New 52 reset, and introduces teenage vigilante Clownhunter (Bao Pham) as a dark-mirror figure who challenges Batman's philosophy of non-lethal justice. Together, these debuts and narrative pivots gave James Tynion IV's run a distinct identity and seeded storylines that ran through the Batman title well into 2021.

In "The Joker War Finale," Batman pushes through a city consumed by chaos as allies clash with Joker’s forces and Nightwing confronts Punchline, all while the Dark Knight faces the Joker in a final, desperate bid to reclaim Gotham—Harley Quinn watching closely, determined to ensure this confrontation is the last one that matters. Written by James Tynion IV and brought to life with intense precision by Jorge Jiménez on art and inks, with color by Tomeu Morey and letters by Clayton Cowles, this pivotal issue delivers a high-stakes showdown that defines the war’s climax. The cover, also by Jorge Jiménez, captures the moment with chilling focus.

History

Writer James Tynion IV had been developing the Ghost-Maker concept years before his Batman run, originally sketching the character for an unproduced shonen manga-style pitch about a young Bruce Wayne traveling the world to train — a project he had explored when DC was building its Middle Grade and YA lines. When the momentum behind new characters Punchline and Clownhunter proved strong, Tynion revisited the rival concept and refined it considerably, with artist Jorge Jimenez — who also designed Ghost-Maker's high-tech white costume — transforming the rough idea into a visually distinctive figure. The issue was structured as an oversized, 56-page anniversary package: a main story by Tynion and Jimenez flanked by two backup stories by Tynion with artists Carlo Pagulayan/Danny Miki and Guillem March respectively, the latter directly leading into the Punchline Special one-shot.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Ghost-Maker (Minhkhoa 'Khoa' Khan), created by James Tynion IV and Jorge Jimenez — a one-page cameo at the issue's end; his full story begins in Batman #102.
  • First full in-story appearance of Clownhunter (Bao Pham of the Narrows), a Joker War-era vigilante who kills Joker's clown gang members and gets a confrontation with Batman in the 'Intervention' backup story.
  • Barbara Gordon resumes the Oracle identity for the first time in the post-New 52 continuity, coordinating the entire Bat-Family from the Burnside Clock Tower during the Joker War's finale.
  • Published October 6, 2020 (cover date December 2020); written by James Tynion IV; main story art by Jorge Jimenez; backup art by Carlo Pagulayan, Danny Miki, and Guillem March.
  • 56-page oversized issue, the conclusion of the 'Joker War' crossover arc that began in Batman #95 and in which the Joker commandeered Bruce Wayne's entire fortune and Bat-arsenal.
  • Key story beat: Batman chooses to save Harley Quinn over the Joker when forced to pick between two explosive belts, a deliberate break from the dynamic in which the Joker always assumes Batman will prioritize him.
  • The 'Dead Ringer' backup story, drawn by Guillem March, serves as a direct lead-in to Punchline Special #1 (2020).
  • Jorge Jimenez also debuted Batman's new blue-and-black armored Batsuit in the issue, a significant redesign from the black-and-gray standard; Jimenez created a 1:25 retailer incentive character-design variant cover as the capstone of a consecutive series running from Batman #92–#100.
