The Nice House on the Lake #1

DC Black Label's 2021 horror series opens with a cover that makes its unease immediately clear: a lone figure — wide-eyed and barely keeping her head above water — is surrounded by an overwhelming mass of skeletal remains, while a warmly lit, modern lakeside house glows ominously in the darkness above. The contrast between that inviting domestic light and the carnage below is deeply unsettling, and Álvaro Martínez Bueno's painterly rendering, colored by Jordie Bellaire's moody palette of deep teals and cold grays, gives every bone a horrible weight. James Tynion IV launches what promises to be a chilling series, and this first issue's cover alone signals that the nice house in question holds anything but comfort.
