John Ostrander was born on April 20, 1949, and has established himself as one of the more versatile and durable writers in American comics over a career stretching from the early 1980s through the present day.

He broke into the medium in 1983 and quickly made his mark at First Comics with *GrimJack*, a noir-inflected science-fantasy series that became one of the defining independent titles of that era. His work for DC Comics proved equally consequential: his reinvention of the Suicide Squad as a morally ambiguous government black-ops team became a template for ethically complicated superhero storytelling, and the concept proved enduring enough to inspire two major Hollywood films in 2016 and 2021. Among his most significant contributions to DC continuity was co-creating the Oracle identity for Barbara Gordon, transforming a sidelined character into one of the most resourceful figures in the publisher's universe.

Beyond those headline achievements, Ostrander demonstrated consistent craftsmanship across a remarkable range of titles — *The Spectre*, *Martian Manhunter*, and *Hawkworld* among them — each distinguished by psychological depth and a willingness to engage with moral complexity. He later brought the same sensibility to *Star Wars: Legacy* for Dark Horse Comics. With over 840 credited issues across more than four decades, his catalog reflects a career built on substance rather than spectacle.
