“Send for... the Suicide Squad!”

"Send for... the Suicide Squad!" delivers a gritty, high-stakes look at a world where heroes are being pushed out by political pressure and public fear. As President Reagan’s order takes hold and the Justice League retreats, a newly formed Task Force "X" — a squad of villains offered freedom in exchange for service — faces its first test, while Robin (Jason Todd) is left vulnerable after a heroic act turns violent. John Ostrander and Len Wein craft a tense, character-driven story, with John Byrne’s dynamic art and Karl Kesel’s sharp inks bringing the chaos to life, all under the stark, memorable cover by Byrne.

As President Reagan's executive order goes into effect, the heroes are either forced underground when in action, or to retire, such as the Justice League. As Godfrey's speeches continue to rally an anti-hero fervor, Robin (Jason Todd) is surrounded by a frenzied mob shortly after he saves a boy, and is injured by them. Brimstone is also revived and faces the new Suicide Squad (as Task Force "X," composed of villains making deals with the govt. for their freedom), with Blockbuster as their first casualty.
