Martian Manhunter #9
Issue #9 of this 1999 solo series plants J'onn J'onzz firmly at the center of the DC Universe, and the cover by Tom Mandrake says it all — the Martian Manhunter stands in commanding close-up, cape billowing, while Wonder Woman, Flash, Steel, Superman, Aquaman, and a smiling figure in shades fan out around him in a show of solidarity beneath the tagline "All for One, One for All!" The assembled JLA lineup surrounding their green-skinned colleague gives the image a real sense of camaraderie and scale, hinting that the story inside — "The Burning Grave," crafted by writer John Ostrander — carries some serious weight for J'onn's world. If you've been following the series spinning out of JLA, this is a chapter that clearly raises the stakes.
