“Slipping Into Darkness”

Kicking off the "Nightshade Odyssey" arc, this June 1988 issue throws the full Squad into what looks like a burst of otherworldly darkness — seven characters surge forward out of a swirling black void, including a green-clad woman with hair flying, the blue-costumed Nightshade, a soldier in camouflage brandishing a pistol, a white-masked figure in blue, a muscular man in yellow, a gold-armored powerhouse, and the white-haired Deadshot in his distinctive red suit. Jerry Bingham's cover art gives the ensemble a real sense of momentum and urgency, with that crackling dark energy framing the team beautifully. John Ostrander and Luke McDonnell were quietly doing some of the sharpest team-book work at DC in 1988, and this issue's promise of a Nightshade-centered story makes it a compelling chapter in the series.
