“The Dragon's Hoard, Part V: Dragon's Blood”

Part five of "The Dragon's Hoard" arrives with one of the most unsettling covers of 1991 — a ghastly, red-eyed vampire figure clutching an unconscious dark-haired woman against the backdrop of a great golden dome, with bat-winged creatures lurking in the shadows above. Geof Isherwood's pencils and Karl Kesel's inks give the scene a genuinely menacing texture, the pale horror's snarling face front and center as things clearly go very wrong for the Squad. John Ostrander and Kim Yale's five-part arc builds to a blood-soaked crescendo here, and this cover makes a compelling case that the title is operating at full intensity.
