Brian Bolland's painted cover for this June 1996 issue is quietly stunning — the Spectre looms in his deep green hood and cloak, his pallid, grimly downcast face framed by a violent burst of fire and churning smoke behind him, his feet lost in billowing clouds. There's something almost mournful in the composition, capturing the weight that comes with being DC's Spirit of Vengeance. John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake were crafting some of the most thoughtful dark fantasy in 1990s comics, and "The Poisoned Land" promises another morally complex chapter in that run.
