About this Issue

XSE #1 is the opening chapter of a four-issue limited series that finally gave Bishop's dystopian future setting its own dedicated stage, moving the Earth-1191 timeline from fragmented flashback cameos scattered across Uncanny X-Men into a sustained, front-and-center narrative. The issue delivers the first full-length origin treatment of both Bishop and his sister Shard — a story of orphaned children surviving mutant relocation camps, carrying the dream of Charles Xavier forward in a world still ravaged after the Summers Rebellion — which Marvel itself later designated essential context for understanding the character. It also marks the in-continuity introduction of Hecat'e, the founding commander of the Xavier's Security Enforcers, and future-timeline XSE agents Sureshot and Trace, cementing the institutional lore that had underpinned Bishop since his debut five years earlier. As one of the few mid-1990s X-Men tie-ins structured entirely around a Black lead character and his found family, the series reflected Marvel's broader, if belated, effort to give spotlight-worthy solo space to non-white X-Men.

History

The series was written by John Ostrander — a veteran best known for reinventing the Suicide Squad at DC and co-creating the Oracle persona for Barbara Gordon — making XSE a notable cross-publisher assignment during his productive mid-1990s Marvel period, which also included Bishop's earlier solo title and work on X-Men vs. the Brood. Issue #1's interior pencils were handled by Chris Gardner, with inks by Terry Austin and Tom Palmer, coloring by Derek Bellman, and lettering by Comicraft; Kelly Corvese edited the series under editor-in-chief Bob Harras. The issue shipped with multiple cover variants — a Chris Gardner cover (Cover A, direct edition) and a Steve Geiger cover (Cover B, sometimes identified by its yellow background) — alongside a newsstand edition, a common practice for Marvel X-titles at the time. The series ran for four issues through February 1997 and was followed by a 1998 sequel mini-series, Bishop: XSE, also written by Ostrander.
