Bill Willingham, born in 1956, is an American comics creator whose career spans more than four decades as a writer, artist, colorist, inker, and letterer. He broke into the industry in the early 1980s, with his catalog credits dating back to 1983, and remained actively publishing through 2024 across some 520 issues.
The New Mutants #1 (1983)
Willingham first made his mark with *Elementals*, a superhero series that demonstrated his ability to blend genre conventions with darker, more character-driven storytelling. That reputation for layered narrative grew considerably when he launched *Fables*, the work for which he is perhaps best known — a long-running series that reimagined fairy-tale and folklore characters living in exile in modern New York. The title spun off *Jack of Fables*, among other extensions, cementing his standing as one of the more distinctive voices in contemporary American comics.
