Fables #48

Fables #48 opens the two-part "Wolves" arc from Vertigo's mature-readers series, written by Bill Willingham with art by Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha. James Jean's painted cover is hauntingly beautiful — a pale, bloodied figure collapsed against a soft, fog-like background, with a small portrait sketch visible at the bottom corner hinting at a face caught up in whatever dark events are unfolding. The muted whites and reds create an atmosphere of quiet dread that feels distinctly removed from any ordinary fairy tale.
