“Pentacle”

The second issue of DC's Shadowpact drops readers straight into the thick of a supernatural team brawl, with the cover by Bill Willingham laying out a wonderfully chaotic clash between the Shadowpact and their adversaries the Pentacle. Figures crowd every inch of the image — a blue-skinned demon, a white-haired masked figure, a massive dark gorilla-like creature, a hooded blue-caped sorcerer, a grinning blonde in sunglasses, a masked knife-wielder, and a mysterious red-haired woman looming above them all, locked in a seething melee of claws, swords, and outstretched hands. Willingham (writing and drawing, with inks by Wayne Faucher) brings real energy to this 2006 series, which revels in the darker, stranger corners of the DC Universe where magic reigns and the heroes fighting for it are anything but ordinary.
