“Turning Pages”

At the center of this Vertigo issue's Brian Bolland cover looms a cracked and battered Humpty Dumpty — bandaged, wide-eyed, and looking considerably worse for wear — surrounded by a wonderfully eccentric crowd of fable characters including a towering top-hatted figure, a blonde woman in glasses, a skeletal Native American warrior, a camel, and an assortment of dwarves and odd creatures. Bolland's precise linework gives the whole ensemble a sly, darkly comic energy that fits Jack of Fables perfectly. Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges's "Turning Pages" promises the kind of twisted fairy-tale mischief that made this 2008 Vertigo series such a distinctive corner of the Fables universe.
