This September 2012 Vertigo issue wraps up the "Wooden Toys" chapter of the "Cubs in Toyland" arc, and Joao Ruas's cover sets a beautifully unsettling tone — a wild-haired, pale child looms large in the background beneath a blood-red moon, while the foreground is scattered with battered, battle-worn toys: a damaged teddy bear, a small robot, and broken figurines that hint at something far darker than any nursery. The muted, sepia-drenched palette gives the whole image a dreamlike dread that perfectly captures Fables at its most hauntingly fairy-tale strange.
