Fables #10
This haunting James Jean cover for Fables #10 sets a quietly unsettling winter mood, with snowflakes framing a bandaged figure in a wheelchair tenderly cradling a small creature with an eerie glowing aura, while a standing figure holding a cigarette looms nearby. Reflected in the wheelchair's wheel is a gloved hand gripping what appears to be a pig's head — a deeply strange image that hints at the dark fairy-tale undercurrents running through Bill Willingham's world. With art by Mark Buckingham and inks by Steve Leialoha bringing the interior to life, this 2003 Vertigo issue is a fine example of the series' ability to blend the uncanny with the melancholy.
