The story delves into Bigby's past and the nature of his werewolf heritage, revealing a hidden community of werewolves living in a small town. Written by Bill Willingham and illustrated by Craig Hamilton, this standalone tale expands the lore of the Fables universe beyond the main series.
In "Chapter One: When We All Lived in the Forest," the fragile peace of Story City shatters as Bigby Wolf leads the Spezialeinheit in a brutal campaign of destruction, while Carl's fanatical followers turn on their own in a desperate bid to kill him. Written by Bill Willingham and illustrated by Jim Fern with inks by Craig Hamilton, Ray Snyder, Mark Farmer, and Fern himself, this pivotal issue unfolds with haunting intensity, set against Lee Loughridge’s evocative colors and Todd Klein’s precise lettering. The cover, by Daniel Dos Santos, captures the storm at the heart of the chaos.

Recognizing that their lives and their systems have collapsed, Sigi commits suicide. Bigby and the Spezialeinheit make war throughout Story City, burning much of it in the process. Carl orders his followers to burn fellow members of the community in hopes of killing Bigby at the same time. Bigby hunts and slays the Spezialeinheit members, sparing only two for his own purposes, and orders a mass gathering on the morrow.
