“1883 Chapter Two: Moon of the Wolf”

Brian Bolland's cover for this 2008 Vertigo issue captures the irrepressible Jack front and center — wide grin, broad cowboy hat adorned with crossed-pistols insignia, and a revolver leveled straight at the reader — while two rugged supporting figures framed in sheriff's stars lurk in the background alongside silhouetted riders on horseback. The tagline "The West Was Really Won By…" sets a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek tone that suits Jack's particular brand of self-assured roguery perfectly. With Willingham and Sturges steering the story and a free Madame Xanadu preview tucked inside, issue #23 is a fine stop on this wild frontier chapter.
