From the very first arc of Bill Willingham's celebrated Vertigo series, this October 2002 issue presents a cover by James Jean that is equal parts glamour and unease — a blue-gowned woman twirls joyfully with a formally dressed, blue-skinned beast-like figure against sweeping red curtains, while a pig with a collar peers out from behind a towering New York City building below. The juxtaposition of fairytale strangeness and modern urban life captures exactly what makes Fables such a compelling premise. With interior art by Lan Medina and inks by Craig Hamilton, "Chapter Four: Remembrance Day" is a confident, visually striking entry in one of Vertigo's most imaginative series.
